Project: Garden design (private client)

Location: Glasgow south

This steep garden required an imaginative solution due to the general topography and the existing summerhouse and deck which were incorporated into their existing positions. To create a sense of a journey through the garden, a staggered set of steps was introduced, making its way between tailormade gabion baskets filled with river cobble.

The sawn sandstone steps provided a contemporary edge to the garden, contrasting sympatheticallly with the cobble stone and the lush planting. The journey to the deck was managed by wrapping the final sandstone step around the corner of the decking, creating a seamless, slick transition.

Year-round interest was guaranteed with the mix of spring bulbs, herbaceous perennials, architectural shrubs and small trees. A crab apple tree was planted next to the summer house, a species of tree guaranteed to increase biodiversity in the garden.
